The Importance Of People

What's the secret to building a great company?

For over 50 years Silicon Valley entrepreneurs have been famous for evolving and developing companies with new ideas that change the world.  That’s a long track records.  How do they do it, and then do it again?

Conventional wisdom suggests that there are three essential elements to building a great company:

  •  Product or service

  • Management

  • Money

Certainly these are right. One needs a great product and/or service; a top-notch management team; and enough money to make it happen. But that’s very simplistic. Those are necessary, but not sufficient. Add to that all of these:

  • Visionary thinking

  • Passion

  • Hard work

  • Motivation and drive

  • Great products and/or services to solve real problems

  • Patented intellectual property (I/P)

  • Market timing

  • Luck

  • Continuous reinventing as the world changes

This is a great list, too, but there’s more. At the end of the day, it always comes down to one key thing: people. Sure, it helps to have a great idea and to time it right so people flock to your doorstep and pull out their wallets. But everything gets done through people and through relationships. Leaders have the vision. Followers get things done. Customers help shape the future. Investors and advisers provide valuable third-party insights. And on it goes. Entrepreneurs must never overlook this fundamental premise that it always comes down to people.
